N.B. The lot is accompanied by a sales receipt in the artist's hand for this watercolor (and two other Heysen works that are not in this auction) plus correspondence from the artist regarding their sale and shipment to the art dealer Fred McClean (1962). There is also a lengthy letter from Fred McClean, written in 1982, recounting his memories of visiting Hans Heysen at his home
The Cedars in Hahndorf in 1962 at the time of purchase. Speaking of
The Brook, Waterfall Gully, McClean quotes the artist's description of the watercolor as "a little picture that he loved doing and that he had never previously offered it for sale."
Wilhelm Ernst Hans Franz Heysen was born in Hamburg, Germany. He migrated to Adelaide in South Australia with his family in 1884 at the age of 7 and became a successful artist, painting and drawing the landscape of his adoptive country. The inscription on the reverse locates this scene in the Nearer Adelaide Hills, South Australia, near the artist's home in Hahndorf.
Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 16 1/2 x 18 3/4 x 7/8 inches.
The second signature or inscription and date are located l.l. in the water at the edge of the mat. The date seems to read "1904," but it is indistinct. The inscription appears to be the artist's signature since it ends in "...SEN." To explain the two signatures, it may be that the clearer signature on the lower left was applied by the artist when he sold the watercolor to art dealer Fred McClean in 1962.
The condition of the watercolor appears good.
