N.B. In a letter from Judith Hansen O'Toole, dated December 4, 2003, the scholar noted that this particular composition was a favored one for Roesen for teaching and even training his students. Nearly two dozen examples of varying quality exist. In her opinion, the painting at hand, while attributed to Roesen's studio, exhibits some combination of work by Roesen and some by another hand. A copy of the letter accompanies the lot.
