Two pen and ink drawings abutted in a common mat, sight size 5 3/8 x 6 in. (13.8 x 15.0 cm), framed.
Condition: Minor rippling, pale staining, small repair c.l. edge, toning, not examined out of frame.
N.B. Flaxman began his career as a designor of cameos and classical friezes for Josiah Wedgwood. His line drawings illustrating Classical literature won him fame across Europe.
The drawings at hand relate closely to a wood engraving after a Roman relief (marble, 4th quarter of the 1st century AD) in the Louvre museum, Paris, published in 1868.
