N.B. Jakob Bogdány studied live specimens in aviaries such as that of his patron, the Admiral George Churchill, who made his home at the Lodge in the Little Park at Windsor. Churchill created not only a beautiful garden in the grounds, but a famous aviary full of unusual birds, providing the opportunity for Bogdány to study these exotic creatures. Bogdány also painted from stuffed models, a small collection of which he had in his studio. Guinea pigs, originating from Peru, were introduced into Europe in the mid-1500s and occasionally feature in still-life and bird pictures.
