N.B. The painting was reviewed via high resolution digital images by experts at the RKD (Netherlandish Institute for Art History), who determined the attribution to be School of Emanuel Murant. There is much to link the painting to Murant, mainly because of the painstakingly precise depiction of bricks in the ruins, which is a typical trait of his. Also the positioning of a crumbling ruined wall as a repoussoir on the outer side of the composition is a device he sometimes experimented with. The type and rendering of the figures also seem to match with his accepted oeuvre.
However, most of Murant's known paintings depict typical Dutch landscapes or views of towns and villages, and there are only a few paintings with specific Italianate scenes. The signature appears to be highly unlike Murant's known signatures and monograms. He mostly signed with "E.M." and sometimes "EMurant." The spelling "Emeurant" has not been documented in paintings by his hand. The date rendered in Roman numerals is unusual (even though the year 1676 could be perfectly possible). Because of Murant's talent in rendering architecture in convincing detail, the lack of three-dimensional structure of the buildings in this work points to an artist working in Murant's style.
