N.B. The creator of his 17th-century drawing is not specifically known, although it has been suggested that it may relate to Elisabetta Sirani of Bologna, one of a handful of professional women artists of the period. Her story is a remarkable one, as she was both prolific and influential during her short life of only 27 years. She was first trained by her father Giovanni Andrea Sirani (1610-1670), who was Guido Reni’s prime assistant. Traditionally convents provided one of the few alternatives for women to study art, because women were not typically permitted to attend art academies or to work from a live male nude model. Sirani won many public and private commissions and was admired and respected. She went on to start her own painting academy, encouraging women students as well as men.
