N.B. This charming peasant girl in traditional garb holding a distaff and twisting the fibers for weaving was a popular subject in the 19th century. The painting offered here is very similar to signed works by Anton Romako (Austrian, 1832-1889) and may indeed be by his hand or a copyist. Anton Romako spent the major part of his creative life in Rome, a city that attracted many Northern European artists seeking markets for their works among the throngs of visitors. Popular and saleable subjects included religious themes, landscapes, and genre scenes of picturesque peasants in local dress.
