Note: Nina Fletcher Little speculated that the carved busts left McIntire's shop unpainted so that the owner could embellish the carving to his or her wishes. An inventory of his shop taken after his death in 1811 documents "8 medallions of Washington" in his inventory. According to Lahikainen, five are known to survive today. The source of the design is believed to be an engraving by Joseph Hiller Jr. based on the profile by Joseph Wright. These smaller medallions may have been used at celebrations for holidays such as Independence Day or George Washington's birthday.
