Roycroft Five-drawer Sideboard, East Aurora, New York, c. 1910, quartersawn oak, mirrored glass, copper, ht. 52 3/4, wd. 56, dp. 22 in.
Note: Elbert Hubbard (1856-1915) was an American writer, publisher, artist, and philosopher how amassed a small fortune as a salesman for the Larkin Soap Company. Hubbard is known best as the founder of the Roycroft artisan community in East Aurora, New York. Hubbard's championing of the Arts and Crafts approach attracted a number of influential printers, furniture makers, metalsmiths, leathersmiths, and bookbinders. Tragically, in 1915, Hubbard and his wife, noted suffragist Alice Moore Hubbard, died in the sinking of RMS Lusitania. Thereafter, the Roycroft community went into a gradual decline.Condition
