Rolex Explorer Gilt-dial Reference 1016 Wristwatch, c. 1965, stainless steel case with brown tropical dial, open chapter ring, patinated indices and 3-6-9 numerals, lollipop sweep center seconds, Mercedes hands, signed crown, 26-jewel caliber 1560 automatic movement, interior case back marked "IV65," Rolex signed 7206 oyster bracelet with end links stamped "60," dia. 36 mm.
Note: One of the longest-running sport watch references, 1016 was introduced in 1963 and ceased in 1989. There were very few tweaks over those two decades to either the case or movement. The gilt dial was achieved by a process called galvanization, meaning the gold-plated brass dial minute track and text was stenciled with a protective coating, dipped in a black paint-like substance, the stencil was removed, and then a clear coating of lacquer was applied.
Condition
Condition: winding setting and ticking at time of cataloging, "tropical" dial with lacquer loss, replaced hand set, twinlock crown, plates with tool scratches, illegible serial and reference markings between lugs from bracelet wear.
