N.B. Robert Colescott, known for his figurative satirical paintings that expose issues of race in America, produced this work on paper at the height of his career, during which he continued his exploration of racism, sexism, and oppression in increasingly animated and vibrantly-colored compositions. Colescott's work profoundly influenced the generations of black artists that have followed him, including Kehinde Wiley (see lots 46, 47, and 48) whose works in a variety of media expands upon Colescott's practice of inserting black figures into themes and forms from the traditional Western art history canon.
