Rare Early New England Fowler, late 17th/early 18th century, 48 7/8 in., .68 caliber octagon-to-round barrel with tall "V" rear sight and short narrow blade front sight; unmarked and unbridled slightly curved flat lock with stepped, beveled, and pointed tail, and flat topped steel secured by three side nails to the slender cherry stock with wide butt made without a butt plate or side plate, with carved plateau around the breech plug tang; sheet iron trigger guard with pointed finial secured to the stock with four rosehead nails; two sheet brass rammer pipes secures the old, if not original, wooden rammer with a horn tip, overall lg. 63 3/4 in.
Condition
Condition: Iron with overall deep brown patina with pitting around the vent and pan areas; stock has old dry surface, old screw repair at the wrist, old tacked wood repair at the forward top area of the lock mortice, wood loss on the left side near the breech for about 12 inches near the muzzle, right side of forestock has small strips of wood loss where the stock meets the barrel, trigger guard has early repair, rammer has an early splice repair with two small iron pins and wrapped with linen thread 10 1/2 in. from the narrow end.
