Pino Signoretto (Italian, b. 1944) Italian Art Glass Yellow Parakeets, Murano, Italy, 1985, incised signature of the artist on top of the base, inscribed "Nedda & Sam, Murano, 1985" to the underside, ht. 17, dia. base 5 3/4 in.
Provenance: Estate of Nedda Casei.
Nedda Casei (1932-2020) was an American mezzo-soprano, performing in the world's major opera houses and appearing in operas such as
Rigoletto,
Carmen,
La Traviata, and
Madama Butterfly. Perhaps her most enduring legacy, though, was her tireless work as an advocate to enact laws to protect and benefit performing artists. She also served as the first female president of The American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA), a post she held for ten years.
Note: Signoretto was a contemporary Italian glass artist. He used traditional Murano glassblowing techniques to depict animals, pop-culture icons, and art historical eras. He began glassblowing as an apprentice of Alfredo Barbini. Starting in the mid-1980s, Signoretto has been internationally recognized for his work, with exhibitions and teaching demonstrations all over the world. He worked with numerous contemporary artists, including Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Kiki Smith, and Jeff Koons.
