Phyllis McGibbon (American, b. 1961)"January 12, 1671", c. 1995. Titled, signed, and inscribed "...Phyllis McGibbon/For Lilian" in the margin beneath the image. Hand-printed lithograph (unique trial proof), sheet size 7 1/2 x 3 3/4 in., framed. Condition: Not examined out of frame.
N.B. The artist has kindly provided the following information about this unique print. "The tonal imagery was drawn onto a lithographic stone, and the text was printed in color from an aluminum litho plate...It's a proof from a larger editioned lithograph called
Sounding: Witchcraft in Groton, which also had the same text fragment printed on the back of the sheet, with generous margins. The editioned print was part of a national print exchange portfolio... Because of that portfolio exchange, the print is in a number of artist's private collections as well as museum collections."
"The text is from a handwritten letter from 1671 (now in the Boston Public Library) describing the symptoms of a young girl who was accused of witchcraft in Groton, Massachusetts. I came across a 19th-century letterpress booklet that republished the letter with some commentary. That 19th-century publisher concluded that it must not have been witchcraft but rather 'a well marked case of hysteria.' (That's what made me listen closer, to between the lines)"
We would like to thank the artist Phyllis McGibbon for her kind assistance cataloging this lot.
