Coming FogSigned "PHILIP LITTLE" l.l., titled, signed, and dated ".../PHILIP LITTLE/1925" on the reverse, also stenciled "PHILIP LITTLE/SALEM MASS." on the reverse, faintly inscribed "COMING FOG..." on the stretcher, stamped "Ex. P.A.F.A." on the stretcher (see below).
Oil on canvas, 29 x 36 in. (73.7 x 91.8 cm), framed.
Condition: Canvas rippling, scattered paint losses, surface accretions and grime, water staining to the reverse of the frame and stretcher.
N.B. When the annual exhibition record of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts was checked, no painting by the title
Outward Bound was found in the listings for Philip Little between 1914 and 1930. However, in 1925 the artist exhibited a painting described as
Coming Fog, which is the alternate title inscribed faintly on the stretcher. Given the atmospheric effects of the painting at hand, it is assumed that these are one and the same.
Condition
Condition: Framed dimensions are 31 3/4 x 38 3/4 x 1 1/2
Stretcher with a very faint inscription "COMING FOG PHILIP LITTLE 192..." and "SALEM MASS" along the top bar. The year may be 1924 or perhaps 1922 or even 1925, depending on the viewing angle. It is just too faint to be certain.
Signs of water staining to lower corners of the stretcher and tacking edges of the canvas, and to the bottom of the frame. Paint losses to l.c. edge and to u.l. corner.
