N.B. In a letter dated October 2, 1962, Electra Carlin, Director of Carlin Galleries, wrote to the owner of the painting at hand, "Because I feel that Peter Hurd has painted himself into this painting...I want you to have this photograph that I took of him with his wife, and his daughter, Carol, in 1961 at their ranch in New Mexico. Artists often use themselves as models for a painting, though I don't often notice such a physical likeness. I think this adds to the interest and value of this particular painting. As you probably know, Peter Hurd's wife is the well-known artist, Henriette Wyeth, and she is the sister of Andrew Wyeth, whose paintings now bring more than any other American contemporary artist. It is quite a family." The letter and the photograph of the artist and his family accompany the lot.
