Patriotic Sand Picture in a Bottle with Paddlewheel Steamer Gray Eagle, Andrew Clemens, McGregor, Iowa, c. 1885-1890, multicolored sand arranged in a glass bottle, one side depicting the paddlewheel steamboat in black and white with an American flag flying in color from the stern, the other side with an eagle and American flag, and both images surrounded by a polychrome stripe motif. The main images are framed by a batwing-form polychrome frieze above, and another frieze below featuring alternating symbols including pinwheels, hearts, and a spiral; all above a polychrome checkered motif, and a lower, abstract motif, ht. 9 1/4 in.
Provenance: Andrew Clemens made many sand bottles on commission to commemorate special events in his clients' lives. Frequently, the captains of steamboats in the Midwest and Great Lakes regions would have bottles made depicting their ships, sometimes along with their names and the year of commissioning. Although this bottle does not bear a date or the name of a specific captain, the clearly legible name on the ship suggests that it may have been part of that group. There were several sidewheelers bearing the name "Grey Eagle" that operated in the region during and around the time that Clemens was active.

Note: Andrew Clemens was born in Dubuque, Iowa, in 1857. At the age of five he became deaf and mute after an illness. He earned his livelihood by painstakingly arranging colored sand to make pictures in glass bottles. The sand came from the naturally colored sandstone in the Pictured Rocks area of Iowa. He worked in McGregor, Iowa, and for a short time he made the pictures and exhibited his work at a South State dime museum in Chicago, Illinois.
