Note: Descended in family of the original owner. George Thomas Papageorge was born in Constantinople, Turkey, on March 29, 1904, to Greek parents. George's father, Thomas Papageorge, was a school teacher in Macedonia when he was called to attend the Greek Orthodox Seminary in Constantinople where his two oldest children, George and Evangeline, were born. George's mother, Mary Papageorge, was from the island of Samos, Greece.
The family immigrated to the United States via Boston arriving on the SS
Romanic in 1908. George's father, now a priest in the Greek Orthodox Church, founded and served in churches in Providence, Rhode Island; Newark, New Jersey; and Augusta and Atlanta, Georgia.
George Papageorge graduated from the Georgia Institute in Technology with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1927. He was the first Traffic Engineer for the State of Georgia and later served in Atlanta as a City Planner for the U.S. Government.
Truly a renaissance man, George guided the extensive mosaic art installation at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation in Atlanta. A gifted and enthusiastic teacher, he taught classes on Shakespeare, European history, and classical music at Senior University at Oglethorpe College in Atlanta.
Awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1968-69, George taught City Planning at the National Technical Institute in Athens, Greece. It was during this time in Athens that he purchased this Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 2526 with his initials engraved in Greek: Gamma Theta Pi; the watch was later gifted to his nephew. Papageorge died in 1999 in Atlanta, Georgia.
