Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973)
Le joueur de diole, 1957. Unsigned, dated "6.2.57." on the lower edge, label from the Hammer Galleries, New York, affixed to the frame. Unique hand-painted, glazed terra-cotta tile, 7 11/16 x 7 5/8 in. (19.4 x 19.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Good.
Provenance: From the estate of the artist to the estate of Jacqueline Picasso; through to Etienne Sassi, Inc.; through to the Hammer Galleries, New York; to the current private Massachusetts collection.
Exhibitions: Hommage à Jacqueline Picasso, Galerie Sassi Milici, Vallauris, France, July 21-September 10, 1990; Picasso - Unique Ceramics, Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn Harbor, New York, November 16, 1996-January 26, 1997. This exhibition showed first at the Hammer Galleries, New York, listed on page 28 of the show's catalogue; Picasso - Unique Ceramics from the Estate of Jacqueline Picasso, Hammer Galleries, New York, Summer 1999.
N.B. A photo-certificate from Maya Widmaier Picasso dated November 11, 1996, accompanies the lot.
