Norman Rockwell (American, 1894-1978)
Study for Cellist and Little Girl Dancing
Initialed "N/R" l.r., dedicated "My best wishes to/Mrs. Alden Barber/cordially/Norman Rockwell" l.c., identified on two labels affixed to the frame backing.
Pencil on paper, sight size 6 x 4 3/16 in. (15.0 x 10.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Creasing, scattered small stains, probable toning, not examined out of frame.
Provenance: Collection of Mrs. Alden Barber; through to Heritage Auctions, American Art Including Western, California, & Golden Age, May 10, 2014, Lot 70294; to the current private collection.
Literature: Norman Rockwell, The Norman Rockwell Album (Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, 1961), p. 33 (ill.).
N.B. The completed illustration, Cellist and Little Girl Dancing, was featured on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post, February 3, 1923. A color photograph of the magazine cover is encapsulated on the frame backing.

Condition: Framed dimensions are 19 1/2 x 15 3/4 x 2 3/4 in.
One of the labels affixed to the backing gives the dimensions as 8 x 5 inches. The other label provides 6.6 x 4.6 inches (17 x 12 cm) as the size.
