New England Militia Musket, c. 1765-1785, 46 3/4 in., .76 caliber octagon-to-round French barrel with a partial mark on the top and left flats near the breech, secured to the stock by three American-made sheet brass bands; double bridled curved flat French Model 1728-type lock with stepped and pointed tail, the inside surface of the plate marked "M"; cherry stock with subtle figuring to the grain and slightly concave butt profile; brass furniture including a sheet brass butt plate with stepped tang secured to the stock with small brass tack around the perimeter and a single iron nail in the butt, cast brass trigger guard with pointed finials, sheet brass "S" side plate, the forward barrel band with two straps, the second and third bands with wide projections on the bottom each band with a seam at the top; steel rammer with button head and coarse threads at the base, overall lg. 62 5/8 in.
Condition
Condition: Barrel and lock with overall deep brown patina, minor pitting around the breech and pan areas; brass toned to a soft yellow; stock with overall minor dings, dents, and scuffs; rear side nail and side plate are likely later replacements; cock is likely a period replacement, missing mainspring.
