New England Fowler, third quarter of the 18th century, 47 1/2 in., .72 caliber octagon-to-round barrel with wedding band decoration and traces of engraved floral decoration along the breech flats, small top-mounted bayonet lug, and engraved "33" on the left side of the muzzle; unbridled English commercial lock with flat plate engraved with simple foliate decoration, the inside surface marked "KETLAND"; cherry stock with pronounced drop in the butt and Roman nose comb, carved plateaus around the lock and side plate, double line decoration along the rammer channel and where stock meets the barrel; brass furniture including butt plate with stepped and pointed tang, American trigger guard with coarse file/engraved line decoration, American openwork side plate with coarse engraved decoration, and three sheet brass rammer pipes; wood rammer with brass cap tip, overall lg. 63 3/4 in.
Condition
Condition: Iron toned to a deep brown; vent is enlarged; steel was refaced during the fowler's working life; stock has scattered dings and dents, old repaired cracks on the left side of the forestock and there is wood restoration to the area in front of the upper rammer pipe, foward nine inches of right side is retored; brass is toned to deep yellow; rammer not original.
