Needlework Sampler, Jerusha C[ushman] Holmes, probably Plymouth, Massachusetts, 1826, in silk threads on a linen ground, four alphabets separated by varying borders, single-line verse "Let virtue by a guide to thee," and maker's name, age and date below, all above a landscape stitched with house and fence, with watercolor sky and trees, all surrounded by floral spandrels, 13 x 10 in., with off-white mat and cloth-covered backing.
Note: A photograph of the frame's old backing (now gone) showing the extensive Plymouth history of the ancestors of Jerusha Holmes indicates that she was born on January 18, 1814, and married Lemuel Bradford in July, 1836.
Estimate $600-800 losses to threads, especially to floral spandrels, area of brown oxidation and losses to some letters at upper right, minor losses in building, toned and slightly faded overall.
