Condition: Retouch to the sky, craquelure, alligatoring and small bulge to canvas at u.r. corner, minor abrasions, subtle canvas rippling.
Provenance: Purchased from the Estate of Ruane Manning through the New Windsor Auction Gallery, New Windsor, New York, April 26, 1986; then by descent to the current owner.
Condition
Condition: Numbered "#466" on the reverse and "No 17905" on the stretcher. Very faint canvas stencil to the middle of the reverse.
Framed dimensions are 30 3/4 x 42 3/4 x 1 1/2 inches.
Canvas ripple along the top edge above the ship. Canvas slightly loose on the stretcher. Craquelure overall, which is more noticeable in the sky, seems stable, with a few raised edges (minor tenting). L-shaped accretion to u.l. edge measuring 1 x 1/2 inches. A bulge in the upper right corner with a surface abrasion and paint losses, and alligatoring to the varnish layer around this area, the whole area measuring 3 x 3 inches. A crescent-shaped protrusion with fine craquelure to the left of the vessel starting just above the horizon and extending slightly into the ocean, measuring 4 inches long and 1/8 inch wide.
