Marsden Hartley (American, 1877-1943)
Mont Sainte-Victoire
No visible signature, identified, titled, and dated ".../...1927" on an exhibition label from The American Federation of Arts, New York (see below), and with labels from Babcock Galleries, New York, all affixed to a piece of a previous frame backing attached to the current frame backing, and with an exhibition label from Greenville County Museum of Art, Greenville, South Carolina (see below), affixed to the frame backing.
Pencil on paper, 22 1/2 x 31 in. (57.0 x 78.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Deckled edges, pale toning and soiling near edges, tears c.l. and c.r., small tear u.l., dog-ear creases near l.l. and u.r. corners, floated within the frame, not examined out of frame.
Provenance: The artist, circa 1927-1943; estate of the artist (Estate #379), 1943-1959; Babcock Galleries, New York, 1959-1965; collection of Michael St. Clair, New York, 1965-1996; private collection, Corpus Christie, 1996-2001; private collection, New York, 2001 to present.
