Engravings with hand coloring, plate sizes to 14 3/4 x 11 in. (37.5 x 28.0 cm), in matching frames with French mats.
Condition: Toning, minor handling creases, opccasional fox marks, not examined out of frames.
N.B. Three of these prints appear to be plates from
Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, and the fourth may be as well, although from different editions. Three have plate numbers in Roman numerals at u.r. corners, and two of these are identified in the plates "Prunier d'Amerique" and "Citronier." At least two of these also have faint arabic numbers in the l.r. corners. The fourth print of grapes is signed by the engraver as "P. Sluyter sculp" in the plate l.r. and a small plate number "34." Pieter Sluyter (Dutch, 1675-after 1713) is a recognized engraver of Merian's works. This print shows more toning and several fox marks and has a slightly smaller plate size measuring approximately 14 x 10 5/8 inches.
