Manner of Willem van de Velde the Younger (Dutch, 1633-1707)
Le port hollandais
Unsigned, inscribed "Van der Welde." in red on the reverse, titled on a printed label affixed to the reverse.
Oil on panel, 8 5/8 x 12 1/2 in. (22.0 x 32.0 cm), framed (under glass).
Condition: Craquelure around a knot in the panel in u.r. quadrant (knot visible on the reverse as well), fine vertical craquelure overall, frame abrasion with a surface loss at l.c. edge, varnish discoloration.
N.B. A handwritten note on the frame backing paper provides the following provenance: "This painting I purchased at Leningrad USSR in an Auctionshop on Gerzen [sic] Street, Glav Nauka. The government art commission refused to give consent to my exporting it from the Soviet Union because it was recognized as a Willem Van de Velde and - an as 'old Master' not permitted to be taken out of the country. I made the purchase in September 1929 and brought the painting out on October 1, 1929. It was framed in Chicago, Ill, under the artistic auspices of Mr. Hugh Stuart Campbell C.S.B. Wilmette, and hung in our home 55 Indian Hill Road, Winnetka, Ill. on December 10th 1929 H.J. Freyn."
The painting was reviewed by digital photographs by staff at the RKD (Netherlands Institute for Art History), who felt that the work was probably created by a 19th-century follower of van de Velde or Hendrick Jacobsz. Dubbels (Dutch, c. 1620-1707). The elevated point of view from which the scene is depicted and the manner in which the boats are cut off at the edges of the composition are unusual for paintings from the 17th or 18th century, and the ships' riggings are of a type that was in use from the 18th century onwards.Condition
Condition: Reverse of the panel with a gouge (1 x 1/4 in.) in the u.r. quadrant.
Framed dimensions are 14 x 18 in.
