Major Oliver Alexander Horner's Remington New Model Army Revolver and Associated Items, c. 1863, serial number 58569, .44 caliber, steel frame marked on the left side "W" above the cock screw and "P" on both sides of the frame just forward of the exposed barrel threads, the cylinder marked "P" on the outside and the back of the cylinder marked "8569" and "K," the octagonal barrel marked on the top "PATENTED SEPT. 14. 1858/E. REMINGTON & SONS. ILION. NEW YORK. U.S.A./NEW-MODEL.," the left and right sides of the barrel marked "P," the underside of the barrel marked with serial number, left side of grip frame marked with the serial number, the right side of the grip frame marked "R," brass trigger guard and walnut grips, the left side with "JR" cartouche; with unmarked leather holster, two albumen carte-de-visite photographs of Major Oliver Alexander Horner with printed history, a Baker & McKenney cap box, a Gaylord pistol cartridge box, five lead bullets, three percussion caps, and a small modern bronzed eagle decorated shield.
Note: Major Oliver Alexander Horner served in Cole's Maryland Cavalry enlisting August 27, 1861. He served through the Civil War until he was mustered out on June 28, 1865.
Condition
Condition: Revolver frame and cylinder is toned brown with small areas of bluing intact, barrel and loading lever retains approx. 30-40% of its blued surface, grip strap toned to a gray/brown, grips have carved cutouts on the bottom surface perhaps to accommodate a lanyard, but are otherwise in good condition with crisp cartouche, action is crisp; holster has area of loss on the barrel stitching, a crack on the exterior and surface wear; cap and cartridge boxes have wear, belt loops are intact; photographs have imperfections on the edges/corners.
