N.B. As a young artist, Lucien Clergue became close friends with Pablo Picasso and photographed him extensively. Over the course of the next two decades they collaborated on many portrait sessions, which are collected in the monograph
Picasso my Friend. In 1970, along with novelist Michel Tournier and art historian Jean-Maurice Rouquette, Clergue founded the annual photography festival in the south of France, Rencontres d'Arles.
