N.B. Lois Conner is a photographer who often works in the landscape and since receiving the first of two Guggenheim Fellowships in 1984, primarily in Asia with a focus in China. The lotus is a symbol prevalent throughout Chinese art and Conner began an ongoing series of the lotus in the 1990s. It has been a reoccurring motif in her practice ever since. Working with a 7 x 17-in. banquet camera, Conner has photographed in Yuanming Yuan or Garden of Perfect Brightness since her first trips to Beijing. She creates expansive compositions of the magnificent gardens in a panoramic format that accentuates every detail, fully enveloping the viewer.
