• Lot Description
  Limited Edition Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Rattrapante and Travel Clock, this example was executed to celebrate the 2009 Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, no. 91 of 500; PAM 00332 in a special hard black brushed steel case, textured dial with a blue and polished split second chronograph hands, screw-back case marked with limited edition number, original leather band with signed buckle, double column wheel 31-jewel caliber OP XVIII automatic movement; together with the Panerai OP 6599 desk alarm clock engraved on back "Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge 2009/1st Classified," box, leather wallet, guarantee booklets, chronometer certificate, warranty cards, additional rubber strap, and tools, dia. 44 mm.
  
  Note: The consignor of this watch learned to sail on Lake Michigan aboard a Herreshoff-designed 38-foot gaff-rigged sloop built by Lawley Bros. in 1918 and owned by his family. After college and while working in Buffalo, New York, he bought and restored a Star Class day sailor/racer which was sailed on Lake Ontario.
  
  After moving to Connecticut he located a Herreshoff Fishers Island 23, a 33-foot day sailer which he restored and sailed out of Fisher's Island Sound and began racing in Classic Yacht races, including the Newport Classic Yacht Regatta.
  
  In 1990, while looking for a larger cruising sailboat, he located the Rogue in a barn in Massachusetts and spent four years of evenings and weekends completing a full restoration.
  
  The Rogue was built by Seth Persson in Old Saybrook and launched in 1953, based on the hull design of a Herreshoff Newport 29, designed in 1914, and a custom rig designed by Sparkman and Stevens in 1953. The Rogue is "one-of-a kind," and has proven to be a rare combination of a comfortable, fast cruising boat and an extremely capable racer, having won numerous classic yacht regattas as well as "Off Soundings" and other New England racing circuit regattas.
  
  The Panerai alarm clock was awarded to the Rogue for finishing first in her class in the Newport Classic Yacht Regatta, and the Panerai watch was awarded for first overall (all classes) in the same regatta.
  
  Seth Persson also built and launched the renowned Sparkman and Stephens designed Finisterre in 1954 which went on to win three consecutive Newport to Bermuda races, in 1954, 1956, and 1958.
