Lewis, Meriwether (1774-1809) and William Clark (1770-1838) Travels to the Source of the Missouri River and Across the American Continent to the Pacific Ocean. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, & Brown, 1814. First British edition, large quarto, illustrated with the large folding engraved map, and five engraved plans on three plates, one page of publisher's ads at rear; bound in contemporary marbled boards, with a new calf spine, lacking the half-title, 10 1/2 x 8 1/4 in.
This text was first published in Philadelphia in two octavo volumes in the same year. The large folding map is of special importance, and is often found lacking.Perforated stamp of Chicago Historical Society in leaf 17/18.
