Junius Brutus Stearns (American, 1810-1885)
Children Fishing
Signed and dated "Stearns 1850" l.r., titled on a label from The American Art Union and on a fragmentary label, both affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 28 13/4 x 36 in. (73.0 x 91.3 cm), framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, fine, stable craquelure.
Provenance: The artist; to The American Art Union, 1852; to Mary Monica Maguire, 1852; through to M. Knoedler & Company, Inc., until 1946; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio, 1946-1970; to a private New York State collection, 1970-2018; Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers, American & European Fine Art, October 25, 2018, Lot 161; to a private collection, Hudson, New York.
