Note: Richard C. Dawkins enlisted and became a 2nd Lieutenant on December 7, 1861, and rose through the ranks to become Colonel of the 6th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry by the end of the Civil War. In one of the letters included with this group is one written in 1812 to Dawkin's wife after he had passed away, describing the gift of the gold watch "He called his company in line and read the commission, which, vowed if accepted, would part him from his old Co., and with tears in his eyes vowed that he would rather command and be with his boys and command them alone than to be a general in the United states Army. But his boys well knew that he deserved and merited this promotion, and bade him go, and as a small token of love and esteem the company presented him with a splendid gold watch and chain, which he wore until the day of his death, and he has told me more than a score times since the war, that outside of his wife and babies, there was nothing he prized more than the watch and chain that his boys from their scanty earnings of thirteen dollars per month had presented him."
