N.B. Jim Marshall was a photojournalist known for creating iconic images of musicians in the 1960s and 70s. In 1963 while working on assignment in Hazard, Kentucky, Marshall lived with and photographed a coal mining family that was living on the brink of poverty. Over the course of the assignment, he sensitively photographed the family in their personal space. The journalist that covered the story never travelled to the region and in Marshall's opinion was disrespectful in his representation of their lives. He therefore refused to allow his photographs to be published with the article.
