Monogrammed "JBG" l.l., artist identified on a presentation plaque, with a
collection label from Charlotte-Auguste-Mathilde, Queen of Württemberg, affixed to the reverse.
Oil on panel, 7 x 5 3/4 in. (17.8 x 14.8 cm), in an elaborately carved frame.
Condition: Minor scattered losses, craquelure, surface grime, discolored varnish, bowing to panel with damage to the corners.
Provenance: Charlotte-Auguste-Mathilde, Queen of Wurttemberg (1766-1828); through to and possibly purchased by Henry M. Shepherd, 1859; by descent to Perry M. and Eleanor Shepherd, Geneva, New York, 1940s; by descent to Deborah Shepherd Petri, Framingham, Massachusetts; by descent to the current owner.
N.B. The painting has been reviewed by Dr. Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus of the Frick Collection, who confirmed the attribution; a letter from Dr. Munhall accompanies the lot.
This work has descended in several generations of the Shepherd family and may have been acquired by Judge Henry Martyn Shepard on a European grand tour in 1859. The family was located in Geneva, New York.
