An old woman reading or Rembrandt's mother as the Prophetess Anna, c. 1631. Signed and inscribed "RH van Rijn inventor./JG van Vliet fecit." in the plate u.r., inscribed faintly in pencil beneath the plate mark "Portrait of Rembrandt's mother reading/by Van Vliet after Rembrandt/No. 26, p...of Da..." l.c. Etching and engraving on paper (a very late and worn impression), plate size approximately 10 3/4 x 8 7/8 in., framed. Condition: Creasing, including a prominent horizontal crease through the center, dog-ear l.r., and handling creases, small tear to u.r. edge, pale spot to u.l. corner, foxing, toning, staining, not examined out of frame.
N.B. Van Vliet studied and collaborated with Rembrandt. This print is after an oil painting by Rembrandt in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
