Signed "James McBey" in ink beneath the image l.r., inscribed "Trial proof II" in ink l.l., titled and inscribed "The Advance on Jerusalem Wadi Ali" in pencil in the lower margin. Drypoint etching on paper, plate size 7 7/8 x 13 13/16 in., unframed. Condition: Toning, soiling to the margins, small losses and wear to the edges of the sheet, hinged to a thin cardboard support in two places on the reverse.

N.B. James McBey had a long association with North Africa. In 1916 McBey enlisted in the military and his pictures of the Somme offensive led to his appointment as an Official War Artist. In 1917 he was sent to Egypt where he produced some 300 watercolors of the campaign in Egypt and Palestine. The subject of this print shows a column of heavy artillery, troops, and supplies entering the Wadi Ali gorge near Anwas, about 18 miles from Jerusalem.

Condition: The sheet measures 10 1/4 x 16 1/8 inches.
Thin cardboard support measures 13 5/8 x 18 7/8 inches and is inscribed on the reverse with the Parke-Bernet provenance.
