- Lot Description
Inscribed Albumen Carte-de-visite Photograph of Disabled Civil War Veteran Alfred A. Stratton, c. 1870, the oval image set into a printed gold frame, the back of the card inscribed in pencil "Carry me to 110 Carlton Avenue Brooklyn in case I should get hurt to my Wife Julie, Alfred A. Stratton," image 1 7/8 x 1 3/8, card 3 7/8 x 2 3/8 in.
Note: Alfred Stratton (1844-1874) was a blacksmith from Ellicott, Chautauqua County, New York, who enlisted into the Union army on August 19, 1863. He mustered into Company G of the 147th New York Infantry. Stratton was severely wounded by cannon shot at Petersburg, Virginia, on June 18, 1864. The severity of his wounds was such that both of his arms had to be amputated. After the war Stratton received a pension, was married to Julie Elizabeth Johnson in Brooklyn, NY, and had a son, Henry. Alfred died in Washington, DC, and is buried at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery.Condition
