Black chalk, ink, graphite, and watercolor on paper, 12 x 8 1/2 in. (30.5 x 21.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Pale toning, mounted to a supporting sheet which is hinged to a paperboard backing mat.
Provenance: Collection of François Renaud (French, 18th/19th Century).
N.B. In 2003 the drawing at hand was reviewed from photographs by Victor Carlson, who felt that the chalk drawing was by Hubert Robert but that the watercolor might have been added by a later hand. However more recent scholarly review has suggested that the watercolor elements are original to Hubert Robert.
Dr. Carlson further noted that this composition of a bather in a landscape is known also in an oil painting (in reverse), now in a private collection. A copy of Victor Carlson's letter accompanies the lot.
