French Naval/Coaching Short Musket, c. 1760, 18 1/2 in. octagon with ring to round barrel with slightly flaring muzzle, the barrel engraved acanthus leaf decoration at the breech and ring, and with floral scroll at the muzzle; double bridle lock with curved plate and stepped tail, flat cock, facetted pan, vertical bridle connecting the steel screw to the steel spring screw, the inside of the plate marked "[illegible inscription]/LAYNE"; walnut stock with high comb butt, the left side marked "A.F.Z.P.," engraved brass furniture with panoply of arms and scroll decoration on the butt plate tang and trigger guard, the side plate with scrollwork engraving, single brass entry pipe, steel rammer with large button head and spiral jag at the end, overall lg. 33 1/4 in.
Condition
Condition: Iron is mostly bright with subtle gray mottling; brass toned to dull yellow; stock has scattered dings and dents, a repair to the forward portion of the lock motice, a stable crack from the right side of the lock area running diagonally through the forearm and ending on the right side about two inches behind the entry pipe, a tight crack and areas of wood restoration on the forestock including wood patchs near the muzzle on the right side, and wood fills on the left side near the entry pipe and a crack on the left side just in front of the entry pipe.
