French Model 1774 Infantry Musket, Charleville, France, 1775, 44 11/16 in., .75 caliber round barrel stamped at the breech "H" over a fleur-de-lis over "D75," secured to the walnut stock with three iron bands, the upper band marked with a fleur-de-lis over "D," the middle band marked "T" and with a fleur-de-lis over "D," the rear band with a screw securing an internal rammer retaining spring; slightly curved lock plate, the pointed tail behind the cock with a convex surface, the area in front of the cock flat and marked with a fleur-de-lis over "N" and "Charleville," the inside surface of the lock plate stamped "IMI"; the stock with scratched inscription "WMH/1776" on the right side forward of the lock, and stamped with indistinct letter over "D75" and with a mortice in the front of the forestock for a bayonet spring clip (missing); iron furniture including butt plate with rounded finial stamped with a fleur-de-lis over "D," trigger guard with short forward extension and pointed finials marked on the inside of the trigger guard bow "M," and "S" side plate marked on the exterior with a fleur-de-lis over "D" and "ILI," the inside surface with an indistinct mark; steel rammer with button head, overall lg. 60 in.
Condition
Condition: Metal toned to a mottled gray/brown with minor pitting around the breech and pan area of lock; lock with refaced steel; stock with scattered dings and dents, small wood losses along the upper portion of the forestock on the right side, and a few small minor wood losses at the back of the lock mortice; rammer not original.
