French Model 1763/66 Infantry Musket, Saint-Etienne, France, late 1760s, 44 5/8 in., .76 caliber round barrel secured to the walnut stock with three iron bands; slightly curved flat lock plate with beveled edges, mostly defaced mark on the pointed tail, marked below the pan crown over "HB" and "Manuf Royale/des St. Etienne" and stamped on the inside surface of the lock plate "I. CVLI/OMON"; left side of the butt with indistinct stamped mark and carved initials "AB"; iron furniture including butt plate with blunt finial, trigger guard with pointed finials, and "S" side plate stamped "P" on the inner surface; original sling swivels; iron rammer with button head and threaded base, overall lg. 60 in.
Condition
Condition: Metal toned to a deep brown with minor pitting at the breech; stock with minor scattered dings and dents; narrow 3 1/2 in. long strip of wood restoration near the front of the left side of the forestock; upper band spring missing the locking stud; lock has minor pitting around the pan area and the steel was refaced during its period of use, but part of the lower face has chipped away, lock may be an early replacement.
