- Lot Description
French Dragoon Pistol by Antoine Penel & Fils, Saint-Etienne, France, c. 1710-1730, a pre-regulation pistol with 13 3/4 in., .65 caliber octagon-to-round barrel with steel blade front sight, marked at the breech "MERIEU" and with a mark on the left flat partially obscured by the stock; slightly curved lock with convex surface stamped with a crown "BC" mark and "A. PENEL/LE FILS" and on the inside surface "P. MER[?]EY"; walnut stock with carved plateaus around the lock, side plate, breech plug tang, entry pipe and rammer channel and line carved decoration on stock along the barrel; brass furniture, the butt cap with simple line decoration, crown over inverted pear thumbpiece, trigger guard with pointed-on-disk finial, engraved disk and scroll side plate, and plain rammer pipes, overall lg. 20 1/2 in.
Note: Antoine Penel & Fils supplied firearms to New France for the Indian trade during the second quarter of the 18th century.Condition
Condition: Iron bright and with minor spots/areas of pitting; lock pan and associated area of barrel pitted from use, mainspring screw replaced; one sidenail replaced; stock with minor dings, dents and a few worm holes, old tight crack below lock mortice, triangle of wood repair under and in front of trigger guard finial; rammer not original.
