French Colonial Militia Musket, c. 1740-1760, 46 7/8 in., .78 caliber octagon to round barrel with top flat extending to the bayonet lug, the breech marked with a crown over intertwined "NC" and intertwined double "L" mark, barrel secured to the stock by four pins; double bridle lock of French Model 1728 form with stepped and pointed tail, stamped with a fleur-de-lys over "RC" and fleur-de-lys over "RG" below the faceted pan, the inside of the lock plate marked "HM," and the tumbler with assembly number "VII"; walnut stock with Roman nose comb; iron furniture including French Model 1728-type butt plate with long narrow tang, trigger guard with pointed finials, the rear finial marked with a fleur-de-lys and illegible initials, flat "S" form side plate marked "TR" and with a fleur-de-lys, a restored sling ring opposite the lock, four sheet iron rammer pipes, and a sheet iron nose band; steel rammer with button head and remnants of a spiral jag at the end, overall lg. 62 1/4 in.
Note: While this musket possess some traits similar to French ordnance muskets of the mid-18th century as well as French commercial hunting guns of the same era, period documents listing the wide variety of French arms used in New France are often not specific enough to be able to conclusively identify many of the early French arms surviving in American collections. Condition
Condition: Iron toned to a deep brown with minor pitting around the vent areas of the barrel and lock, vent has an old iron bushing; while the lock is not original to the gun, it appears to have been associated with the musket for a very long time and may be a period replacement, lock has a period refaced steel; stock has minor scattered dings and dents, the lock mortice has chipping to the front and old leather repair to the rear, old wood breaks around the breech plug tang have rosehead nail and screw repairs, left side forestock has a narrow three inch splinter of wood replaced at the muzzle, right side of forestock has a several glued splinter cracks with some having minor associated wood loss, and a 10 1/4 in. long section of wood restoration at the muzzle; sheet iron nose band is restored, sling ring opposite the lock is restored.
