Frederick Bigelow Siege of Boston Carved Powder Horn, Roxbury, June 4, 1775, inscribed "FRADERICK BIGeLoW HIS HORN/MADE AT ROXBURY june ye 4 1775/THE ROSe IS ReD THe gRAS/IS gReen THE DAYS ARE PAST/WHICH I HAVE SEEN 1775" and "CANADAY IN CONNETTECUT" decorated with a stylized view of the Town of Boston and three fortifications; the lines of text bordered by stylized meandering vines and geometric patterns, the spout end of the horn with carved scalloping and carved arch decoration, the base with carved arch decoration, the pine convex base plug secured to the horn with six wood pins, the center of the plug with a brass furniture handle mount; carved on the inside surface of the horn in a later, likely early 19th century hand, is a crude figure of a man holding a flintlock musket and an apparent flag, bird, and "TERENCE L. McENTEE," horn likely had a metal spout at the tip that is long since lost, lg. 12 in.
Note: Frederick Bigelow served as a private in Capt. Levi Wells' 8th Co., Col. Joseph Spencer's 2nd Connecticut Regiment, May 13-December 17, 1775.
Condition
Condition: Horn has an overall mottled surface, there is a small old crack at the base adjacent to two pins, base plug has scuffs and associated interruptions to the patina; spout end likely had an attached metal spout that was removed long ago.
