N.B. Filippo de Pisis was born in Ferrara as Luigi Filippo Tibertelli. He studied philosophy and literature rather than art at the University of Bologna, and became both a poet and an artist. At the university he met Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi. Their influence opened his mind to painting, and he moved to Paris to work. Upon his return to Italy he lived an extravagant lifestyle in Rome, Venice, and Milan.
His earliest works were stylistically linked to Futurism, but his style evolved into the mature style seen here, with its looser, almost feathery, brushwork and still lifes of mundane, everyday objects.
