N.B. An artist and conservator, Felrath Hines was a founding member of Spiral, a group of African American visual artists organized by Romare Bearden in New York in 1963 in response to the civil rights movement. His Blue Painting was included in the landmark exhibition Afro-American Artists: New York and Boston at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts in 1970. While actively participating in the New York arts scene as a painter, Hines maintained a respected conservation studio whose clients included the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, and artist Georgia O'Keeffe. He concluded his conservation career in Washington, DC, as Chief Conservator of the Smithsonian Institution's National Portrait Gallery and, later, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, after which he devoted his attentions entirely to painting.
