Eugene Berman (Russian/American, 1899-1972)
Proserpina
Signed with initials and dated "E.B. [within a circle]/1944" upper center, signed, inscribed, and titled "E. Berman/Hollywood. Feb.-March, 1944/..." on the reverse, with exhibition labels from the Carnegie Institute and the Whitney Museum of American Art affixed to the back of the frame and the stretcher (see below) and labels from the Saint Louis Museum of Art affixed to the stretcher bar and the backing board, with accession number inscribed on the stretcher and the reverse and with an ink stamp from City Art Museum, St. Louis, applied to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 58 1/2 x 45 1/2 in. (148.5 x 115.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Minor surface grime.
Provenance: Property of the Saint Louis Art Museum, sold to benefit the Acquisition Fund.
