N.B. Eric Sloane, born Everard Jean Hinrichs, grew up in New York and was first influenced by his neighbor, Frederic Goudy. Goudy, famous for his typeface designs, taught the young artist to paint signs. Sloane's first employment came painting markings on planes at Roosevelt Field. In exchange for his work, Sloane was given flying lessons, and it was at this point that he became fascinated with the sky and clouds, elements that he would continue to feature in his painting for the remainder of his career.
Sloane left home as a young man and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. He was particularly enthralled by the history and craftsmanship of early America. In New England he was influenced by the work of the early settlers and sought to preserve their traditions through celebrating their work in paintings of barns, covered bridges, and stone walls.
In 1926 he traveled to New Mexico, where the natural beauty of the landscape and the unique heritage of the people moved him deeply. He built an adobe hacienda in La Tierra near Sante Fe called "Casa de las Nubes" (The House of the Clouds).
Sloane wrote several books and painted nearly every day. Through his work, in both painting and writing, Sloane harkened back to an earlier age of simplicity, natural beauty, and early American traditions.

The covered bridge depicted here is very similar to one identified by the artist as "Lovejoy Bridge, Maine," the title of a smaller painting sold by Skinner in 2018, which may have been a study for the larger work offered here. (American & European Works of Art auction, January 26, 2018, Lot 262.
